Guwahati: In a remarkable display of grit, determination, and adventure, Assam’s para cyclist Rakesh Banik is set to undertake a 9,000-kilometre-long cycling expedition — from Moscow, Russia to Guwahati, his hometown. The ambitious journey aims to raise awareness about disability rights, promote inclusivity in sports, and inspire differently-abled individuals across the globe.
Banik, who lost partial mobility in his lower limbs after a road accident nearly a decade ago, has since become a symbol of resilience in the world of para sports. Speaking to the media before his departure, he said, “This journey is not just about me — it’s about challenging stereotypes and showing the world that disability is not inability.”
Expedition Route and Challenges
The mammoth cycling expedition will begin in Moscow and take him through several countries, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, and Myanmar, before culminating in Guwahati. Covering rough terrains, mountainous passes, unpredictable weather, and international borders, Banik’s journey is expected to take around 4 to 5 months to complete.
Logistical support will be provided by a small support crew, but Banik has made it clear that the cycling itself will be a solo feat, highlighting self-reliance and physical endurance.
A Mission Beyond Miles
Beyond personal achievement, Banik hopes his expedition will shine a light on the lack of accessible infrastructure for differently-abled people, especially in rural India. “Mobility challenges often limit our opportunities — in education, employment, and even travel. That needs to change, and I want to make people think about that through this expedition,” he said.
He is also promoting the importance of mental health for those with disabilities, emphasizing that community support, opportunities in sports, and visibility can make a huge difference.
Support and Recognition
Several local sports bodies, disability rights organizations, and even the Assam government have come forward to support Banik’s historic endeavour. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the para cyclist, calling him a “real-life hero” who embodies the spirit of Assam.
“Rakesh’s journey will not just put Assam on the global map but will also inspire countless individuals who believe their physical limitations define their future,” said CM Sarma in a public statement.
Cycling for Change
Banik has previously completed shorter cycling expeditions across India, but this 9,000 km international challenge will be his most ambitious feat to date. The journey will be documented through social media updates, vlogs, and daily logs, allowing people across the globe to follow his progress in real-time.
Conclusion
As Banik pedals across continents, his story will serve as a powerful testament to the indomitable human spirit. His expedition is not just a personal milestone, but also a clarion call for inclusivity, awareness, and hope for the differently-abled community in India and beyond.
