Vatican City: Pope Francis has shown significant improvement after suffering a serious respiratory crisis, the Vatican confirmed on Tuesday, adding that the Pontiff is now breathing without mechanical assistance.
The 87-year-old head of the Catholic Church had experienced severe breathing difficulties over the weekend, prompting doctors to place him on mechanical ventilation for a brief period to ease respiratory distress.
Recovery Underway
Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni said in an official statement that Pope Francis’ condition has stabilized, and his breathing has improved sufficiently to allow him to be weaned off ventilation.
“The Holy Father is breathing on his own and remains under close medical observation, but his recovery is progressing positively,” Bruni noted.
The respiratory scare comes just months after Pope Francis underwent abdominal surgery, raising concerns about his overall health as he continues his demanding schedule of public appearances and international engagements.
Health Concerns Resurface
This latest health episode has once again drawn attention to Pope Francis’ ongoing medical challenges, including his chronic lung condition stemming from a severe infection he suffered as a young seminarian. Despite occasional hospitalizations, the Pope has repeatedly dismissed speculation about stepping down, stating his commitment to serving as long as his health allows.
Vatican Prepares Contingency Plans
While the Pope’s condition is improving, Vatican insiders acknowledge that the Holy See has prepared contingency plans in case the Pontiff’s health deteriorates further.
However, Pope Francis himself has shown no intention of slowing down, with a packed schedule of audiences, diplomatic meetings, and religious ceremonies planned for the coming weeks.
Global Well-Wishes
Leaders and faithful around the world have sent prayers and messages of support, wishing the Pontiff a full recovery. Catholic communities across Latin America, Europe, and Africa have held special masses for his health, underscoring his global spiritual influence.
